Unlocking Skills

Don’t worry about unlocking the ‘wrong skill’ at the start of the game, as you will eventually be allowed to re-assign skill points for a small fee, allowing you to change it. Though advised, you choose skills that enable you to stick to a specific path because unlocking a single talent from each tree for a character early on will almost certainly guarantee you will not get far. When you become proficient at everything, you cannot branch out until later.

Complete Side Quests

In each new area of Dragon Quest XI S, you visit you will be offered side quests, although tedious the rewards you gain make them worthwhile doing. If you do the side quest in the opening portion of the game, you will learn how to use Pep Powers.

Sparkly Spots

As you progress through the world of Dragon Quest XI S, you will notice the occasional shining spots on the ground. It’s always worthwhile stopping to investigate them as doing so will reward you with an item that can vary from money, healing things to crafting materials. The easiest way to find these sparkly spots is to open the map and press A, and this will bring up an option that says ‘Sparkly Spots,’ which, when you select, will display every hidden sparkly spot in the area.

Talk To People

In Dragon Quest XI S, it is always worth talking to the townsfolk to provide quests and valuable tips. You will be able to tell what they have to offer by the color of the exclamation bubble that appears above their heads. There are three essential colors to look for:

Purple:

There is a side quest this character would like to give you. You can save a cat, hunt for a specific item, or eliminate some enemies. Completing side quests will reward you with rare materials and recipes to craft more substantial items.

Pink:

You need to hear what this character has to say about the main quest. Pink bubbles will appear on the guards at the front of towns to help you find your way if it has been a while since you were there last. If you are not sure what to do next, keep an eye out for a character with a pink bubble above their head.

Blue:

This character has something trivial to say which will be of no help to you whatsoever. Talk to these characters if you want to learn about their troubles or something fun and inconsequential about Andrea.

Finding Recipes, Equipment, and Materials in Towns

Dragon Quest XI S lets you enter the homes of the townsfolk, regardless of their privacy. In the game, you can find recipes that will give you access to the most powerful equipment. When entering a home, there are three essential things to look for:

Walkthrough

By picking up pots and barrels and throwing them on the ground, you can find items, money, and materials. If you stand close enough to anything you can interact with, a yellow arrow will appear.

Cabinets:

You can find items, armor, and equipment by opening cabinets. As you begin the game, this is a free way of finding new armor for your party, when you do not have much money.

Bookshelves with Red Books:

Red books that stick out from the bookshelves should always be kept in mind. Reading these books will reward you with new recipes you can craft from or enable you to make significant progress in quests through the information you learn.

Preparing For Battle

There are no random encounters in Dragon Quest XI S, so you need to choose your battles wisely. By pressing X, you will be able to access the tactic menu. You can either tell each character how you want them to fight based on the situation or set all characters to ‘Follow Orders.’ You manually select each character’s move every turn. To swap weapons during battle, go to the ‘Equipment’ option and make sure the gun you want to swap to is in your character’s inventory before the battle begins, not in the generic item bag.

Greyed Out Abilities

Some skills are tied to specific weapon types and can’t be used unless a weapon from that skill tree is equipped. This means whenever you see your character’s abilities greyed out during combat, and you need to swap your gun out for one that is tied to the skill you want to use.

Forge New and Existing Equipment

Once the ability to forge better equipment becomes available, you will be able to use it anytime, unlike the PS4 and PC version of this game, where it could only be used at camp. Make sure you check it often to see when this option is available. Every forge receives perfectionist pearls, which are used to improve existing equipment in the forge.

Battle Encounters

When a large ring appears around the fighters during battle, it indicates whether they can flee the encounter or must remain until its conclusion. A clear ring tells you can flee, while a red ring means you have to stay.
